June shoot

Yellow Mike says:

Pards:
Load up your ammo and strap on your gun belts. We are going to dust a bunch of evildoers starting at 0930 Sunday morning. Registration starts at 0800. As usual we will have six scenarios, three before lunch and three after lunch. The after-lunch scenarios will be much more difficult than those in the morning. Not because the scenarios are harder but because you will all be desperately trying to digest the cook’s grub.
Lunch will consist of gourmet road kill. (It is considered “gourmet” by our chef since it was run over by a Cadillac.)
See you on Sunday,

March shoot

Our next cowboy shoot will be held on Sunday, 11 March. Don’t forget to set your clocks forward, since Daylight Savings Time kicks in on Saturday night; showing up an hour late would cause a lot of frantic running around to get ready to shoot.
A warm meal will be available when you come stumbling in from the firing line at the noon break.
On Sunday, we will start shooting promptly at 0930. We plan to have three scenarios in the morning and the second three after lunch.
Sign-in time is between 0800 and 0900.
The moving targets have been improved and are designed to give you fits.
Any questions or feedback, give me a call at (302) 750-2381, or email me at mbenson103@comcast.net
See you at the range,
Yellow Mike

Results of the November shoot

Congratulations to Sunday’s top Duelist, Unexpected Bill, and to the top Traditional shooter, Vaquero Dan. Don’t forget, there is a prize for the top shooter of the year in each category, both male and female. The award ceremony will take place at the last match of the year on December 12th. You do not have to be present to win but, in all probability, the prizes will likely be stolen by one of the lowdown saddletramps we are so fond of associatin' with if the winners aren’t there, with guns drawn, to protect their prizes.

September 11, 2010

The September shoot

Rained out, unfortunately.

July 02, 2010

The August shoot, not

Too hot...

The July shoot

Through an oversight, Rico will be out of town for the July shoot. (Hey, brain damage, what can he tell you?) He will report on the events of the shoot when he returns. As there's no shoot in August, see you in September.

June 13, 2010

The June shoot

The weather was hot, but the rain held off until everyone was headed home. Two victims: Bad Blake had a bad interaction with the loading port of Rico's rifle (not a good thing, but due to being a newbie and not knowing any better), and Yellow Mike had a bad interaction with the weather and had to ice himself down.
Other than that, a good shoot with the usual splendid scenarios courtesy of Tom Barker and the Delaware Blues.
An entire family came by to watch; they will be at the July shoot, apparently. A good thing.

May 25, 2010

The May shoot

The weather was mixed, but the shooting was good, with the usual difficult-but-not-impossible scenarios.

April 11, 2010

The April shoot

The weather was great (mid-70s and sunny), the stages were challenging but fun (thanks to the Delaware Blues who designed and set them up), and the day was great.

Rico's commentary: the use of cross-draw holsters is continuing but lamentable; they are a nuisance for the shooter, the stage workers, and the other shooters. Would that SASS had never made them legal... Spatter, too, continues to be a problem. Seated at the unloading table for much of the day, Rico got hit several times by sizable hunks of lead.

December 22, 2009

The December shoot

According to Mike, lunch at the Mole Hole Cowboy Restaurant at the December shoot on the 13th was to be free. Yes, as in no bucks at all.
In the end, of course, it got rained out, so his gesture went unappreciated. Maybe next year...

October 26, 2009

The November shoot

The next shoot of the Quinton Cowboys will be on Sunday, the 8th of November. The usual challenging stage design, courtesy of Tom.
The Mole Hole Cowboy Restaurant menu for November is plenty of El Diablo chicken (hot and spicy shredded chicken on a roll), some seven-day cole slaw, sweet potato casserole, pickles, and a soft drink, all for only five buck. (After all hungry cowboys are served, second plates will be available for a measly two bucks.)

September 17, 2009

The October shoot

The next shoot of the Quinton Cowboys will be on Sunday, the 11th of October.
A new addition to the event will be the grand opening of The Mole Hole, the replacement for Ptomaine George's now-departed establishment. The food, we hear, will be much improved, and lunch looks to be only five simoleons for a full plate and fixings. See the new website at The Mole Hole Cowboy Restaurant for details.

The September shoot

September brought much nicer weather than in July, and nearly three dozen cowboys showed up to enjoy six excellent stages.

July 12, 2009

The July shoot

Much as last month, the Quinton Cowboys got a nice sunny (if hot) day after a night of rain. The stages (thanks again to Tommy and Vern) were excellent, with an amazing transverse run in the mine car that actually worked.
We had a good turnout, some thirty-plus shooters, with some new guys, and a good time was had by all.
All except Rico, however, who went down early with the heat and bailed after only two (of six) stages. He'll be back for September (no August shoot, remember).

June 14, 2009

Finally, a sunny day

The Quinton Cowboys finally got a bright and sunny Sunday (after a cloudy start, once the rain stopped overnight), and about twenty or so shooters showed up and had a great time.
Tommy and the Delaware Blues crew put in their usual overtime making the stages work well (thanks, Vern, for the stage design), and there was a lot of variation.
Rico brought a new shooter, Mike Malloy (no cowboy alias yet), and he'll be back.

May 03, 2009

Not this one, either

The May shoot got rained out.
We (well, some of us) showed up and some (well, four of us) were willing to shoot, especially after Tommy and the gang put in so much work setting up, but everyone wimped out (okay, okay, it was raining), so no shoot in May.
So, if you're keeping score, it would technically have been Dead Hand Fred, the Quaker Kid, Rico, and some newbie friend of the Kid's, in that order, with the rest declining to participate...
Hopefully in June.

April 05, 2009

Not this time

Rico says that, through a series of errors, he did not make the April shoot. He hopes everyone had a good time and shot well. He will see you in Quinton in May, come hell or high water.

February 14, 2009

2009 schedule

Per Yellow Mike, here is the schedule for shoots in 2009; all are on Sundays and all start promptly at 9.30 am, following sign-in between 8.00 and 8.45:
March 8th (second Sunday) (non-Ptomaine George lunch; $2 for hot dogs and baked beans and bread and soda or water)
April 5th (first Sunday)
May 3rd (first Sunday)
June 14th (second Sunday)
July 12th (second Sunday)
No shoot in August
September 13th (second Sunday)
No shoot in October
November 8th (second Sunday)
December 13th (second Sunday)
Questions should be emailed to Yellow Mike at mbenson103@comcast.net

December 31, 2008

Source request

Rico saw a cowboy at the last shoot with a great jacket, made by Wah Maker. According to the company, it's called a 'Walker' coat, and they don't make it any more. (Durn.) If anyone knows of a source for one (size XXL or 48), please email him.

December 16, 2008

Skill request

Rico says he's got a small leather pouch that needs some repair on the handle, and wonders if there are any cowboys out there with the skills and the tools and the willingness to do some work for him, cheap. Cash or trade for graphics or writing work.

Obituary

Yellow Mike received a call from Mae Ott that her husband, Silver Fox, has passed on. Being a fine craftsman, he apparently had a wonderful gun cart, and Mrs. Ott would like to sell it to one of his fellow cowboy shooters. If you're interested, email her to see it.

Mild Bill Calloway, the best pard a cowboy could have. {Note his disgustingly low SASS number...}

May shoot

.
The May shoot of the Quinton Cowboys took place on Sunday the 4th.
Here are the results; we had 35 participants and no casualties. Our winner in Duelist class was Blaze Crittenden and the Traditional category was won by Nanticoke. Quite a few of the participants switched from Duelist to Traditional and vice-versa, which means that they have accumulated year end Award points in both categories.

The cowboys

A partial list of those who show up to shoot at the Quinton range. (If you're not here, and want to be, submit your photo via email to the webmaster. If you're here and don't want to be, send him an email.)

Dead Hand Fred, the Quaker Kid, Mild Bill, and some mysterious vaquero, all at Purgatory in 2008.

Mild Bill, loading.

Dead Hand Fred, stylin' cowboy style.

Kate and the Kid.

Nanticoke, aka Mario, who's unfailingly cheerful, and still misses (as do we all) Too Dang Frank.

Too Dang Frank, who's lamentably too dang dead.

Rico at the range.

Real cowboys, looking good.

The wagon we wish we had; see it (and buy a DVD) in Four Hand Draw.

Coyote Creek Mike (at center) and two other disreputable types at his 1881 Ranch in Nevada; Creek was one of the co-founders, along with Rico, of the Faultline Shootist Society in California.

Under the stern tutelage of Yellow Mike, this blog will carry the schedules, results, and miscellaneous hoohah of the Quinton Cowboys club matches, which take place about once a month at our private range outside Quinton, New Jersey. (Notice, in this aerial photo of our range courtesy of Google Maps, the newly-constructed berms that make it a nice three-bay range, with good side protection for all shooters.)
